House (The Library)
GV II*
Detached Building, original use uncertain, now housing the library. Mid C16.
Formerly it extended further north. Dressed stone walls with Ham stone dressings
and clay-tile roofs with stone gable-copings. Stone stack with moulded cornice
on the south-east gable. Two storeys with cellars. North face, stumps of
two walls formerly projecting north. Two-light stone mullion windows with
four-centred arches in square heads, not aligned one over the other. Doorway
with four-centred head. Plank door has overall pattern of recess quatrefoils
in circles, strap-hinges, C16. North-west angle has a projecting stair-turret,
with 2-light mullion windows on each face. It is entered by a doorway with
four-centred head on the east face, plank door with long strap-hinges, C16 or
C17. West elevation has a single-light window (first floor), and a stack
embrasure to the right of this, at first floor level. South elevation has a
4-light (ground) and 2-light stone mullion window, and two 2-light windows in
the gable-end to the east of this.
