Description

YETMINSTER
ST 5910 HIGH STREET
(North side)

11/147 Devon House

GV II

House at right end of terrace. Early-mid C18. Rubble stone walls, slate
roof with coped gables, brick end stacks. 2 storeys. L-shaped plan, with
projecting rear wing at left end. Flat band at first floor level. 6-panel
moulded panel door, in moulded stone surround, under shallow segmental hood
on brackets with ball pendants. Ground floor has two 4-light stone mullion
windows with moulded stone surrounds - chamfered mullions with flat fillet.
Casements with centre horizontal bar. First floor has two 3-light and one
2-light similar windows. Later, rear range, creating a double-pile plan,
with parallel roofs. Rear wing, originally outbuilding, includes a stable
and part-demolished barn. Internally, left ground floor room has large
open fireplace with curved-timber lintel. Interior much altered, but
original roof structure survives with coupled common rafters - no ridge
piece. Interesting transitional design - from sub-medieval to classical
style.
