Description

CRANBORNE
SU 01 SE HOLWELL

7/24 Barn 20m north-east
of Holwell House

GV II

Barn, probably C17. Partly English bond brickwork and partly weatherboarded
timber framing. Corrugated iron roof and opposed plank double doors. To the
east is an attached C19 range of stalls with brick walls and a patent Roman
tiled roof. The original barn is of 4 bays and is an aisled construction
although the north aisle has now gone. The roof has collar and tie-beam
trusses with queen posts. This is an unusual form of barn construction
for Dorset. (RCHM, Dorset, vol. V, p.15, no.30.)
