6/49 Winwhistle Cottage

II

Shown on OS Map as Skies Farm. Detached cottage. Probably mid-late C16
origin. Originally of open-hall form, - possibly a long-house. Timber framed
walls, half hipped thatched roof, one brick stack at right end, one left of
centre - both these late insertions. One storey and attic. Right of centre,
ledged door in C20 plastered porch with hipped roof. Lean-to extension at
left end with plastered walls and tiled roof. Ground floor has three C20
casements with lead lights. Attic has 3 dormers with similar casements. C20
rear extension with plastered walls and thatched roof. Internally, evidence
of smoke-blackered timbers and plaster in loft. Several original timber
framed partitions, some with later brick filling. In hall, large open
fireplace with timber lintel and bread oven - altered. Inner room probably
always floored over, with ladder access from hall. (R.C.H.M. Monument 5.
