Listing Text

5/9 Merrifield House
House, built as the vicarage. An Arts and Crafts design of c1900. Lower
walls roughcast above a cement plinth. 1st floor tile hung (and sloping on
the long sides) with exaggerated bell-cast above a many-moulded 1st floor
band, moulded eaves band. Tiled roof, with tile hung (and slightly
projected) gables, flat roofed dormers; tall stacks with moulded heads.
Rectangular block of two storeys and attic, but with irregular (contrived)
elevations, having a rich pattern of windows, comprising narrow sashes,
single or coupled; there are two curving ground floor bays (each of 6
lights). Each long side has a gabled projection, the narrower north side
having a tall staircase window; the west end is narrower (at the north side)
the tall effect of the gable being associated with a stack. An unaltered
period piece.
