7/139 The Old Town Hall (formerly
listed as Town Hall)
Former Town Hall, ground floor now used as Museum. C17 origin, largely rebuilt
c1774. Walls of rubble stone up to first floor level and brick above; plat band
at first floor level. Stone slate roof. Elevation to road has, on ground floor,
2 panelled doors, one stone mullioned window with lead lights, and a small plain
window. First floor has 2 round-headed windows with lead lights in stone surrounds
with projecting keystones. Similar window in north gable wall. First floor room -
the former Council Chamber, has ornamental plaster cornice. (RCHM, Monument 4.
