URPETH BEAMISH
NZ 25 SW
3/58 Gate piers, walls
and privies at
Methold Houses
GV II

Gate piers, walls and privies (the latter now used for storage). Piers dated
1863. Built for John Eden. Dressed sandstone.

1.5 to 2.0-metre high walls, with low triangular-section coping, enclose
curtilage of Methold Houses. Rounded north-west corner; driveway near north-
east corner. Short serpentine sections to pair of gate piers in west wall.
Tall, square-plan piers have chamfered corners with bar stops and moulded
pyramidal caps; sunk inscribed plaques; METHOLD HOUSES (on north pier);
ERECTED 1863 (on south pier). 4 detached privies regularly spaced on rear
(east) wall. Each privy has 2 boarded doors under flush lintels and a flat-
coped parapet masking a pent roof.

Included for group value. Altered stone sheds and later lean-to additions
on privies are not of special interest.
