3/65 Urpeth Hall, Eastwood
and Westacre

Large house now 3 dwellings: front range Urpeth Hall; left rear wing Westacre;
right rear wing Eastwood. Probably mid C18 centre block with flanking c.1890
wings; C19 rear wings of several builds; main block (Urpeth Hall) contains
c.1890 classical interiors by Sopwith and Sons. Painted roughcast stone and
Welsh slate roofs. Reversed U-plan with flanking wings on centre block.

3-storey, 5-bay centre block: central C19 stone porch; late C19 window surrounds
with projecting sills (mainly replaced sashes; small square openings with
replaced casements on second floor); steeply-pitched roof with coped gables,
shaped kneelers and end stacks. 2-storey wing at left: shallow bowed 4-bay
front with similar fenestration; semi-conical roof above bowed front and
steeply-pitched roof behind; coped left gable and end stack. Long single-
storey, one-bay wing at right has canted stone bay window on front and curved
right return under semi-conical roof.

Rear wings have replaced sashes, steeply-pitched roofs and end stacks: 2-storey,
3-bay left wing with lower addition on rear; 3-storey, 4-bay right wing with
2-storey, 2-bay addition on rear.

Interior: main block (Urpeth Hall) has some c.1890.classical interiors (6-panel
doors, moulded plaster ceilings etc.). Entrance hall with Doric screen. Domed
staircase hall, lit by glazed lantern, has cantilevered geometrical staircase
with 2 turned balusters per tread and wreathed handrail. Oval room in right
wing and 2 rooms in left wing also with classical decoration.

C20 additions on rear of both rear wings are not of special interest.
