Road bridge over River Wear. Probably C14, end arches rebuilt 1770, parapet
widened 1822, C19 end walls. Dressed sandstone. Both faces similar. 4
semicircular arches: double-chamfered central pair on 5 ribs; unribbed end
arches with stepped arch bands. 3 cutwaters on each face rise to form
triangular-plan pedestrian refuges (north-west cutwater is cut back to form
refuge with flat face). Parapet, with chamfered coping, is raked down over
end arches. C19 stone abutments at ends on downstream side. Square-plan end
piers with pyramidal caps at north-west and south-east. Scheduled Ancient
Monument. This bridge straddles the parishes of Brandon-and-Byshottles and
Croxdale-and-Hett.
