Sunderland Bridge
17/68 The Hermitage
House. Mid C17 with c.1930 alterations and additions. Coursed sandstone
rubble; Welsh slate roof and C19 cream-brick chimney stacks. Entered from
rear wing. 3-storey, 3-bay garden front has tall plinth and large squared
quoins. Outline of former 2-storey, gabled porch on central bay. Circa 1930
20-pane bashes in chamfered concrete surrounds. Central ground-floor window
(formerly doorway) under segmental pediment. Three gabled half dormers with
original copings and 9-pane sashes. Steeply-pitched roof with stone-coped
gables and transverse end stacks. Small original chamfered fire-windows on
both returns. 2-storey, 2-bay c.1930 addition on right rear has identical
concrete window surrounds and similar pedimented doorway. Interior remodelled
in early C20. Roof retains 5 adzed upper crucks of heavy scantling.
