8/1 Sunderland Bridge

Road bridge across the River Wear. Probably C14; end arches rebuilt in 1770
and parapet widened in 1822. Dressed sandstone. 4 semicircular arches
with early C19 walls attached to ends. Central pair of arches have 5 ribs
and double-chamfered archivolts. End arches are unribbed and have set-back
archivolts. 3 cutwaters, between arches on each face, rise to form triangular
pedestrian refuges (north-west refuge has flat face). Parapet has chamfered
coping and, like roadway, is raked over end arches. North-east face has C19
stone abutments to each end. End walls are terminated to north-west and south-
east by square piers with pyramidal caps.
