33/14 Bowes Hall
Large house. Early and later C17; refronted and extended in early-mid C18.
Squared rubble and ashlar dressings. Graduated green slate roof and stone
chimney stacks. Double-depth plan with short 2-storey wing to rear of right
3-storey, 6-bay front (2 right end bays and top storey probably added in C18).
Low plinth and raised-and-chamfered quoins. Replaced 6-panel door in pedimented,
bolection-moulded doorcase in third bay. Windows in moulded surrounds: 12-pane
sashes to ground and first floors; smaller 9-pane sashes above. Stone eaves
cornice. Roof with coped gables and shaped kneelers. Corniced end stacks and
2 ridge stacks. Right return: central Dutch door in flush surround; scattered,
mainly C19 sashes. Front half of left return projects beyond rear half. Mid-
wall Venetian stair window, with thick glazing bars, to rear.
Interior. Stone-flagged entrance hall has Roman Doric screen. Large bolection-
moulded stone chimneypieces in drawing room and first-floor front bedroom.
Wide segmental fireplace arch in kitchen. Panelled sitting room with dado rail
and cornice. Several 6-panel doors. Spacious 2-flight stone staircase with
narrow open well and replaced balusters. Mutilated, moulded staircase-hall
ceiling. 2-flight fragment of attic staircase with closed-string, barley-sugar
balusters and a moulded handrail.
Late C20 garage to rear of right return is not of special interest.
