over River Balder
II
Disused railway viaduct over the River Balder. 1868 for the Tees Valley
Railway Company. Snecked, rock-faced sandstone; grey brick arches and tunnels;
cast-iron-railings. Tall viaduct spanning wide and deep river valley.

9 round arches on 8 battered piers and end abutments. Some of the piers have a
double row of throughstones below springing line. Arches in 4 rows of header
bond; tunnels in stretcher bond. Low parapet, above stone band, has railings
with ball joints. End piers with pyramidal caps.

This viaduct straddles the parishes of Cotherstone and Hunderthwaite.
