13/214 Broomielaw Farmhouse
Farmhouse with outbuildings and pump attached. Early C18 with early C19
extension and pump dated 1822. Main house coursed squared sandstone, addition
sandstone rubble, with plinth, quoins and ashlar dressings; stone-flagged
roofs with gable copings and ashlar and brick chimneys. Pump painted metal
encased in wood. Main house 3 storeys, 2 wide bays; 2-storey, 2-bay left
extension to almost the same height.
Main building has 20-pane sashes on first 2 floors and 6-pane fixed lights
on second floor in almost square plain stone rebated surrounds, with holes
for 5 vertical bars. Left extension has pecked flat stone lintels, to renewed
glazed door and 3-pane overlight at right, and projecting stone sills to sashes
with fine glazing bars.
Main roof has moulded kneelers, and banded end chimneys on plinths, the left
with brick patching; lower second-build roof has left end banded ashlar chimney.
Rear full-width 2-storey outshut to earlier house has blocked flat-mullioned
windows; wide horizontal sliding sashes on ground floor, and late C19 sashes
above. C19 extension has full-width one-storey outshut and gabled porch with
door in inner return.
Pump dated 1822, with star and initials J.B. probably for John Bowes - the
owner of the farm and of Streatlam Estate - against gable of porch.
Right pent set-back one-storey, one-bay addition has boarded door and small
window; further smaller blank set-back pent earth-closet addition.
