NZ 11 NE BARFORTH BARFORTH HALL

to north of
Barforth Hall

Planned farmbuildings. Late C18 with early C19 wheel-house. Rubble with cut
quoins and tooled-and-margined dressings. Stone slate roofs except for Welsh
slates on wheel-house, C20 metal sheets on adjacent cartshed, and pantiles on
east range outshut. Ranges around yard open to south; wheel-house to rear of
north range.

Elevations to yard: north range 2 storeys, 4 bays. Boarded double doors in
tall segmental arch. To right window with keyed lintel; 2 part-slatted
windows above. East range 2 storeys, 3 bays. 2 stable doors with keyed
lintels, and windows (the upper slatted) with tooled-and-margined lintels.
Far left stone stair to boarded upper door. Right return shows boarded
pitching door. West range in 2 parts: 2-storey left section with boarded
pitching door; right single-storey 4-bay shelter shed with tooled-and-margined
piers, timber lintels and later infill.

External elevations: Hexagonal wheel-house to north has boarded door and 3
blocked windows; attached cartshed to left. Outshut at rear of east range
shows 3 stable doors and 2 small windows.

Interior: east range has reset Cl6 ceiling: 7 deeply-moulded transverse beams
with 14 roll-moulded joists to each bay. This may be from the west range of
Barforth Hall, demolished in the early C19.
