flanking gateway to
west of Old Smithy

Pair of outbuildings, possibly stables. Mid C18. Roughly-squared stone, with
gable ends towards road pebbledashed; graduated stone slate roofs. Single
storey. East building 3 bays. Central casement window with boarded door on
right and blocked door on left, all under pointed arches. West building 4
bays. Stable door between blocked openings, all with pointed arches, with
second stable door under timber lintel on far left. Elevation to road: each
building has a square-headed recess and a doorway (that in west building
blocked) in an alternating-block surround, under a pedimented gable. Between
the buildings is a wall with an arched coping,and a ruinous central gateway.

This was the main entrance to the former Barningham Academy (now Newby House);
the gatepiers were removed some years ago to Gate House.
