Pair of houses, formerly The George Inn. Several mid- and later-C18 builds,
incorporating earlier fabric. Rubble with tooled-and-margined dressings,
except for squared stone porch; C20 hardrow tile roof. L-plan with extruded
canted porch in angle.

No. 1 (facing east) 2 storeys on basement, 3 bays. 6 steps up to central
fielded-panel double doors in surround with Doric pilasters and pediment.
Renewed 12-pane sash above, old 12-pane sashes in right bay. Left bay, partly
behind added porch, shows blocked 1st floor stone-surround window. Roof hipped
to right; banded ridge stack. Right return shows slab plinth, impost band to
round-arched recess with 12-pane sash, and similar 1st floor window.

Porch, former post office, has renewed glazed door with radial fanlight in
round arch with imposts, 12-pane sash window with flat-arched lintel on 1st
floor and semi-pyramidal roof.

No. 2 (facing north) 3 storeys, 3 + 3 bays. Right part has central 6-panel
door and 3-pane overlight in architrave; 12-pane sash windows. Left part, set
slightly forward, is former coach house: impost band to round-arched arcade
holding boarded double doors; 6-pane sashes to upper floors. Roof hipped to
left, with 2 banded ridge stacks.

Rear of No. 1 six irregular bays. 12-pane sashes to upper floors, five 12-pane
and one 4-pane Yorkshire sashes to basement; irregular quoining of older
building visible near right end. Rear of No. 2 shows various 6- and 12-pane
sashes. All windows in stone surrounds.

Interior of No. 1: Dog-leg closed-string stair with column-on-vase balusters,
moulded newels and ramped moulded handrail. C18 fireplaces in basement; C19
dumb waiter. An internal cross wall 1.2 metre thick corresponds to the
quoining on the rear elevation.

Historical note: Dickens may have stayed at The George in 1838 while writing
'Nicholas Nickleby'; he introduces the Inn into the story.

Late C20 sun-lounge extension at south end of No. 1 is not of interest.
