Gate Lodge, early C19 for J.B.S. Morritt. Ashlar; C20 felted roof with brick
stack. Greek Revival style. Pedimented gable front; 2 steps up to Greek
Doric distyle-in-antis porch, enclosing 6-panel door with raised blocks where
rails join stiles, in panelled stone surround. Block corbels to eaves. Small
ridge stack. 2-bay returns show broad recesses with renewed 9-pane sash
windows in panelled surrounds, and central domed niche holding moulded stone
urn. Rear similar door flanked by 2 recesses with small inserted windows.

Historical note: The artist J.S. Cotman mentions in a letter that he had made
suggestions to Mr. Morritt about the lodges, which Morritt intended to take
(Holcomb, 'John Sell Cotman in the Cholmley Archive', North Yorks. County
Record office publication No. 22, 1980).
