Milestone. Probably c. 1830 for London Lead Company. Painted ashlar slab c.
0.9 metre high with round top. ALSTON 10 MIDDLETON 12 painted in black Roman
capitals on front, O.S. bench mark incised below. The road was engineered by
J.L. McAdam. Source: W. Fordyce History and Antiquities of the County Palatine
of Durham 1857, p. 64.
