11/75 (inset) Mainprise tomb circa
10 metes south-west
of Church of St.

Headstone. Circa 1785 to John Mainprise of South-side and members of his
family to 1820. Sandstone ashlar slab c. 1.4 metres high, with shaped top.
Pecked top panel with low-relief paired skulls under winged head and crown
with motto ITA VITA. Acanthus and palm leaves at sides over incised scrolled
wing heads flanking Greek inscription. Long, well-cut inscription begins
'What lies buried & neglected/beneath your feet contiguous to this Stone/was
formerly JOHN MAINPRISE'. Rear inscription in Hebrew and verse 'Consider Man
weigh well they Frame/The King the Beggar are the Same/Dust form'd us all,
each breathes his Day, Then sinks into his native Clay'. Eroded line of Greek
below, and inscriptions to other members of family.
