6/21 Gateway and wall
23/9/82 attached south of
Manor House
GV II

Boundary wall and gateway to Manor House (q.v.). Probably C17 with late C20
restoration. Thinly-rendered rubble wall with renewed brick coping; rubble
gateway with ashlar dressings and coping.

Wall c.1.7 metres high extends along south boundary of garden of Manor House,
c.10 metres either side of gateway.

Gateway c.2 metres high has flat stone lintel over boarded door with ledge and
battens, under gable with moulded flat coping and 3 ball finials. Renewed
inscription in gable peak 'SIC SITI LIETANTUR LARES (sic)/How happily seated
those lares are/Who feed on Prospect and Fresh Air/Dine moderately every Day/
And Work their Suppertime away', with low-relief scallop shell above. Reset
sundial upside down below this has inscription 'Ad hoc memento...'
