with piers, rails
and chain around

War memorial. Circa 1919 for the workmen and officials of Tudhoe Colliery.
Granite; cast iron chain, wrought iron rails. High tapered pedestal, with
stepped plinth and cornice, and classical decoration to collar worked in
rough-and-polished technique, has square coping supporting life-size, well-cut
figure of woman in simple drapery, with one leg forward and hands resting
clasped below waist. Gothic-lettered inscription 'Erected by the workmen and
officials of Tudhoe Colliery in memory of their comrades who died for their
country in the Great War 1914-1918.' All four sides filled with names in
plain lettering, with ranks and regiments.

8 tapered granite dwarf piers with pointed tops are linked by iron rails, and
have chain formed by cast-iron leafy motifs looped between them, forming
square enclosure to plinth.
