POWERS HALL END (South Side)
No 58 (Spa Place)

(Formerly listed under POWERSHALL END)

II

The original house was built in circa 1736 when an attempt was made to
develop a Spa at Witham. It incorporated the frame of an earlier timber-
framed house, probably C17. Spa Place was probably built for a residential
physician and patients. It was much altered in the C19. The north front
is now painted brick and the south front is plastered. The house comprises
a central block with lower wings to the east and west. 2 storeys and basement.
The centre block has 3 window range on both the north and south fronts.
The wings have 2 window range (1 blocked on each side). The windows are
double- hung sashes with glazing bars, in plain reveals. A central doorway
is approached by steps and has a flat hood. Roofs slate, hipped on the
centre block. The interior has exposed timbers, probably C17.
