Description

TL 63 SE STEEPLE BUMPSTEAD
4/8 Herkstead Green
Cottage
II

House, C16 and C17, altered in C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed
with handmade red clay C17/18 external chimney stack on W side. C17 4-bay range
to E with two axial chimney stacks, one C17, C19. 2 storeys,S elevation, C20
glazed door and 3 window range of C20 casements. The interior has jowled posts,
a steeply cambered tiebeam with arched braces in the crosswing, and original
clasped purlin roof with high collars and curved windbraces. The E range has
lodged axial beams, plain-chamfered, a cambered tiebeam re-used from a medieval
building, and some re-used smoke-blackened rafters. It is clear that this wing
replaces an open hall on the same site, probably the source of the re-used
timber. There are constructional similarities with Herkstead Green Farmhouse,
100 metres to the W.
