TL 63 NE STEEPLE BUMPSTEAD Folly
4/9 High Folly

House, C17, altered in C19. Timber framed, plastered, roof thatched. L-plan,
consisting of 3 bays aligned NE-SW with chimney stack at NE end of middle bay
against SE wall, and NW wing of one bay. C19 external chimney stacks on NE and
SW walls. 2 storeys. NW elevation, halved door at front of tiled gabled porch,
3 C20 casement windows, and 2 more on first floor. The interior has plain-
chamfered axial and transverse beams, face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wall
plates, and close studding exposed in one internal wall only. Cambered tiebeam
with step stops, re-used. Large wood-burning hearth with blocked aperture for
bread oven, and inserted hearth at first floor. Divided into cottages in C19 and
now re-combined. RCHM 33.
