No. 20 (Schoolings)


House, C16 and C17, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with C20
clay tiles. H-plan, consisting of C16 2-bay E crosswing, C17 2-bay W crosswing,
and C17 central range with axial chimney stack at E end, forming a lobby-
entrance. C17 external chimney stack on W side of W crosswing. Lean-to
extension to N of W crosswing with pantiled roof, C18/19. Lean-to extension
to N of E crosswing with roof of C20 tiles, C20. Single-storey extension to
E, C20, and conservatory in SE angle. 2 storeys. S elevation, C20 door, 3
C20 metal casement windows. First floor, 3 similar windows, of which 2 are
in gabled dormers. The W crosswing retains its original roof alignment, but
the remainder has been re-roofed on an E-W alignment, the walls of the E
crosswing raised to meet it. The interior of the E crosswing has transverse
and axial beams plain-chamfered with lamb's tongue stops, and exposed joists
of horizontal section; the central tiebeam has been removed. The W crosswing
has a plain-chamfered transverse beam with exposed joists of vertical section.
The middle range has a plain-chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops,
joists plastered to the soffits.
