Manor house, C16, altered in C18 and C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed
with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays aligned approx. E-W, aspect N, with axial
chimney stack at W end, and C18 external chimney stack to rear of second bay
from E end. 3-bay E crosswing extending to S, with C18 internal chimney stack,
and single-storey extension with catslide roof in SW angle. 3-bay W crosswing
extending to N, with internal chimney stack against W wall, now terminating
below roof level, and roof re-aligned E-W. Long ancillary building extending
to N of this with many medieval features, weatherboarded. 2 storeys. Half-
glazed door in C19 gabled porch with fretted bargeboards. 3 double-hung sash
windows of 16 lights on ground floor and 5 on first floor, late C18. Exposed
high collar and purlin ends on gable of E crosswing. The E crosswing has an
edge-halved and bridled scarf in the W wallplate, cranked braces to the collar,
and an original E ground-floor window of 3 closely-spaced moulded mullions
retaining original ochre paint. The main range originally had a chimney stack
in the short E bay, but this was removed in the C18. It has plain-chamfered
beams and joists of horizontal section with step stops, and 2 front ground-floor
windows each with 2 moulded mullions and mortices for stiffening bars. On the
first floor there is an unglazed rear window with 3 diamond mullions. The
wallplate scarfs are of a type not previously recorded, face-halved, housed
at both ends, and there is a crownpost roof with plain posts and thin axial
braces. The W wing has plain-chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops, and
joists of horizontal section with die-away stops.
