North Side
3/17 Toppesfield Hall

House, late C16, altered in C18 and early C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed
with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays aligned NE-SW, with parallel range to NW,
C18. Rear chimney stack near middle of original range, now enclosed, and
internal chimney stacks at both ends of both ranges, C18. C18 entrance
extension to SE, with 2 hipped roofs, forming a T-plan. 2-storey lean-to
extension to NW, C18, and single-storey service range beyond. Early C20
conservatory to NE. 2 storeys. All the exterior has been substantially altered
in the early C20, and all doors and windows are of this period. The interior
has ovolo-moulded beams, panelling of c.1600 with some reproduction, and an
early C17 fireplace removed from Olivers Farmhouse, nearby. It has a moulded
shelf supported by coupled Ionic pilasters, and surmounted by an overmantel of 3
bays, with detached shafts carrying foliated consoles and an entablature.
Behind the shafts the bays are panelled, and the middle panel has arabesque
arcading. An C18 wrought-iron crane in front has been introduced from another
