TL 7337 TOPPESFIELD THE STREET, West Side

GV II

House, C17 extended in C18 and C19 and altered in C20. Timber framed,
plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays aligned North South
with central chimney stack, forming a lobby-entrance to the East. Single-storey
lean-to extension to rear, C18. Small single-storey extension to North, C19,
and larger C20 extension to West of it. 2 storeys and attics. Central oriel
window with hipped roof, c.1980, and 2-window range of C20 casements. Gambrel
roof, with gables weatherboarded. 2 storeys and attics. Original entrance
blocked to form the oriel window noted above. The interior has jowled posts,
some exposed framing with primary straight bracing, and chamfered axial beams
with lamb's tongue stops at both levels. All posts and horizontal main
members are similarly chamfered and stopped. 2 original ground floor hearths,
one with a blocked opening for an oven. The carpentry style is imitated in the
joists of the NW extension, C20.
