8/112 Outbuilding to rear of No 5
Outbuilding, formerly a dwelling, of the C16 and later.
Timber-framed, rendered on the exterior, with part-slate and part-tiled roof.
The exposed framing comprises a mid-rail, wall posts of substantial scantling and studwork with straight through and halved bracing. At the ground floor of the east elevation, the upper part of an in situ arched door surround is apparent. On the west elevation there is an off-centre truncated external stack, with C20 door to the left (north) and two C19 windows at first floor level. The roof is a shallow gable with tiles on the eastern pitch and slate covering on the west.
Part of the wall framing comprising a wall post, studwork and through-bracing survives on the west. There are axial bridging beams of the C18 or later on the ground floor. A central C19 stair to the first floor has stick balusters. The C19 two room plan-form survives on the first floor and there is an early C19 hob grate in the left-hand room and a later C19 fireplace with brick surround and timber battened door in the other room. The bridging beam of the attic floor frame, two visible tie beams and the visible part of a wall plate are C19.
Castle Hedingham is a typical castle town, lying below the castle built by the de Veres (later the Earls of Oxford) in c1140. In the centre was the church with a triangular market-place immediately to the east of it, now known as Falcon Square. The outbuilding lies at the rear of the properties fronting Falcon Square, King Street and St James Street. Its original function is unknown, but in the C19 it was used as a dwelling, accessed through an alley from St James Street. A C20 infill building serving as the village store has since blocked the thoroughfare, the land-locked outbuilding being used as a warehouse for the shop.
REASONS FOR DESIGNATION
The outbuilding to the rear of 5 St James Street is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Although it has suffered some loss of historic fabric and form, it retains a significant proportion of its original fabric.
* It has considerable group value with the listed buildings on Falcon Square, King Street and St James Street.
