ALPHAMSTONE HENNY BACK LANE
TL 83 NE
House. Late C16, altered in C20. Timber framed, plastered, roof thatched.
4 bays facing SE, with axial chimney stack near middle and C19/20 external stack
at right end. C20 conservatory at left end. One storey with attics. 3 C20
casements, and one more in swept dormer, door to left of C20 thatched porch.
Roof hipped at left end. The interior has jowled posts and heavy studding.
All floors are supported on pegged clamps but probably original: longitudinal
plain joists in both end bays; in middle room, chamfered axial beam with plain
joists of horizontal section. Large wood-burning hearth, original. Clasped
purlin roof with curved wind braces. This house is medieval in plan, but has
post-medieval constructional features. There is an unusual straining beam of
U-form connecting the wallplates near the SW end, an early repair.
