House. C15, altered in C16 and C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay hall facing W, with late C16 axial chimney stack
in left bay, and storeyed service bay beyond. Storeyed parlour/solar bay to
right, partly rebuilt in C18, with external chimney stack at end. Lean-to
extension at left end, 2 lean-to extensions to rear. One storey with attics.
3 C20 casements, 2 plain doors of which one has a simple pediment, 3 C20
casements in gabled dormers. Original gablet roof to left. Roof of right bay
approx. 0.50 metre higher than the remainder. Phoenix firemark on gable of
middle dormer, with legend 'Protection' below oval, and part of spear. The
interior has jowled posts, heavy studding, and original floor of lodged plain
joists of horizontal section in service bay. In hall, display bracing at
parlour end, and inserted floor of transverse and axial beams and joists of
horizontal section, all chamfered with lamb's tongue stops, on pegged clamps.
Mantel beam chamfered with lamb's tongue stops and inscription NG (with the
1586
N reversed), referring to Nicholas le Gryse, rector of the parish (M. Burnett,
Seven Parishes of North Essex). In service bay, oven door of wrought iron,
oven missing, and some wattle and daub exposed internally. In parlour bay,
longitudinal joists of horizontal section, chamfered with lamb's tongue stops,
and C18 recessed cupboard of pine. Collar-rafter roof above hall, smoke-
blackened. The present name is C20 and misleading - this is not a manor house.
