2/63 (25/526) Orchard House
House. C15, altered in C16 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed wth
handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay hall facing N with late C16 axial chimney stack
in E bay, and storeyed parlour/solar bay to W. 2-bay crosswing to E, late C16.
C18 lean-to extensions to W and to rear, early C20 2-storey extension to SE.
Crosswing of 2 storeys, main range of one storey with attics. 3 C20 casement
windows. On first floor, one sash of 15 lights, and one of 16 lights in gabled
dormer, both C18. 4-panel door in C19 gabled porch with trefoiled piercing and
latticed sides. W end has original gablet roof. Grouped diagonal shafts with
dogtooth ornament, rebuilt at top. The main range has a late C16 inserted
floor on clamps, the axial beam chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. The central
truss has been altered in the late C16 with principal rafters to eliminate the
tiebeam, an unusual construction. Crownpost roof, smoke-blackened, with
charring of rafter at E end, indicating a former smoke bay. The crosswing has
chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops, clasped purlin roof with curved wind-
bracing, and in the gable a blocked original window with ovolo moulding.
