Barn approx 50 Metres East of Sculpins


Barn. Circa 1600, extended in later C17 and C19. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with corrugated iron. 16 bays aligned NW-SE with 2 midstreys to NE. Large corrugated iron door at SE end. It is built in 3 phases (1) 6 bays at the SE end with one midstrey, with jowled posts, curved braces renched to the inside of the studs, 2 unglazed windows in the NE wall, each with 3 diamond mullions, and a clasped purlin roof with curved wind-bracing, (2) 5 bays added in the Cl7, the intermediate wall removed, with jowled posts, primary straight bracing, straight braces to the tiebeams, and a butt-purlin roof, (3) 5 bays and a midstrey added in the C19, with unjowled posts, hanging knees, rimary straight bracing, and clasped purlin roof with ridge. Face-halved and bladed scarfs in wallplates of all 3 phases. Parts of the lower walls have been infilled with brick and concreted.
