Great Bardfield Hall


Barn. Early C14. Timber framed, weatherboarded, main roof of corrugated
asbestos, midstrey roof of handmade red clay tiles. 7 bays aligned NNW-SSE, 2
aisles, midstrey to E of third bay from N end. Jowled posts, heavy studding,
arched braces trenched inside studs. Trait-de-Jupiter scarfs in arcade plates,
arched braces to arcade plates. Some posts and aisle ties have oblique trenches
for passing-braces from the wallposts to the tiebeams. Others have raking
shores with short aisle ties from the shores to the posts. Some aisle ties are
jointed to the wallplates by reversed assembly. One tiebeam replaced in
C19/C20. Grooves for original infill of wattle and daub. Walls concreted
between studs to a height of one metre. Arched braces to tiebeams. Anomalies
In the structure indicate that it is mainly of the early C14, with some
rebuilding not later than the C16.
