TL 6730 GREAT BARDFIELD HIGH STREET
8/166 Nos. 1 and 2, Oak
House, divided into 2 cottages. C17, extended in C19. Timber framed, facade of
red brick in Flemish bond, remainder plastered, with exposed framing at left
return wall, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays facing SE with central
stack. Late C19 extension to right, 2-storey lean-to extension with slate roof
behind it, and single-storey extensions with roofs of red clay pantiles behind.
Main range of one storey and attics, right extension of 2 storeys. No. 2, the
left half of the original block, has one mid-C19 sash with marginal lights, a 6-
panel door, and a C20 casement in a gabled dormer. No. 1, the remainder, has a
2-window range of late C19 sashes, a 4-panel door with the upper panels glazed,
and a C20 casement in a gabled dormer. A 4-centred timber doorhead is exposed
in an arch in the brick facade, with the date 1600 painted below it. Dentilled
string course across whole front elevation.
