TL 63 SE GREAT BARDFIELD WALTHAM'S CROSS

3/210 Barn approx. 30 metres
south-east of Cross
Farmhouse

Barn. C16. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red clay tiles
with a black unglazed surface. 5 bays aligned NW-SE with aisle on SW side only.
Central entrance doors in NE side, blocked. 9 C20 windows in NE side, large
modern entrance in SE end. C20 hipped extension at NW end. Jowled posts, heavy
studding, arched arcade braces, simple splayed and bridled scarf in arcade
plate. Curved tension braces trenched inside studs, small area of original
wattle and daub infill in NW end. Arched braces to tiebeams, clasped purlin
roof with arched wind braces. Unusually heavy construction for its period,
unusual design in having had large entrance doors in one side, no doorway in the
aisled side.
