House. C16, altered in C16 and C19/C20. Timber framed, plastered with framing
mainly exposed, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay hall facing SE with
C16 axial stack in right bay. 2-bay crosswing to left, jettied at the front,
with C16 external stack at left. 2-bay crosswing at right, with underbuilt
jetty at the front, with C16 external stack at right. C16 stair tower behind
left bay of hall and left crosswing. Small C18 and C19 extensions to left of
it. Single-storey extension to right of right crosswing, with catslide roof.
Hall of one storey with attics, remainder of 2 storeys. Ground floor, below
jetty of left crosswing, late C16 bay window of 5 transomed lights, all
ovolo-moulded, with moulded brick plinth, and restored 2-light windows to each
side; 2 reproduction windows. First floor, 2 reproduction windows and 2 more in
gabled dormers. All the reproduction windows incorporate genuine C16 and C17
wrought iron casements. C18 6-panel door. On main stack, 3 late C16 octagonal
shafts with ornamental caps. On left stack, 2 similar shafts, and Royal
Exchange firemark. Other windows at sides and rear incorporating C16 and C17
wrought iron casements. At rear, one early C18 sash of 12 lights. Jowled
posts, heavy studding, curved bracing trenched to the outside. In left
crosswing, wide hearth with moulded jambs and depressed arch of bare brick, late
C16. Doorway at head of stair tower with 4-centred arch; framed aperture
apparently for first-floor garderobe next to stack, blocked and plastered over
internally. Crownpost roof with axial bracing. In right crosswing, similar
framed aperture for garderobe, rebated for a door on the inside, plastered
externally, with a panel of original patterned daub above. First-floor hearth
with hollow-moulded depressed arch of bare brick. Cambered tiebeam with wide
arched brace, and crownpost roof with axial bracing. In hall, inserted floor
comprising a chamfered axial beam and plain joists of horizontal section, mainly
plastered to the soffits, chamfered tiebeam with step stops, and smoke-blackened
crownpost roof. RCHM 5.
