11/124 Terling Stores and
Post Office


House. Late C14, altered in C16 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay hall facing SE and two 2-bay crosswings. C16
stack in right bay of hall, and external stack to left of left crosswing. Small
extension to right side of right crosswing. C16 stair tower to rear of left bay
of hall, and later extension to right of it. Crosswings of 2 storeys, hall of
one storey with attics. Ground floor, 2 C20 splayed bays, one C19 splayed bay,
2 C20 fixed lights. First floor, 3 C20 casements and one more in gabled dormer.
One C20 half-glazed door and one C19 plain door. The left crosswing is jettied
to the front, with 2 plain brackets exposed, and on the left return, with 2 more
plain brackets, and a plain corner post. The right crosswing is jettied, with
one plain bracket exposed, and the right corner is jettied at eaves level, with
one plain bracket. The interior is much concealed by modern features and
plaster but the original frame appears to be mainly present, and of high quality
where it is visible. Cambered tiebeam in hall with richly moulded arched braces
meeting in the middle, and 2-way spandrel struts. Cross-quadrate crownpost with
4-way bracing and plain base, smoke-blackened. RCHM 12.
