House. Early C17, extended in C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays facing N with central stack, forming a
lobby-entrance. C18 rear extension, forming a T-plan. Single-storey extension
in right rear angle, and catslide roof from rear extension. Larger
single-storey extension in left rear angle, roofed with slate and forming
catslide with rear extension. To left of it, Cl9 stack and bread oven. 2
storeys. 2-window range of C20 casements. Central C20 half-glazed door. 3
octagonal shafts with moulded bases, rebuilt above. The left return is jettied;
below the jetty is a carved bracket in the form of a grotesque figure.
Chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops (transverse in left bay, axial in right
bay) with plain joists of vertical section. On ground floor, large wood-burning
hearth to left of stack, the mantel beam cambered and chamfered with lamb's
tongue stops. The hearth to right of the stack has a depressed brick arch,
splays in the rear angles, and at the back 2 narrow vents separated by a
chamfered brick pier, a rare feature. On the first floor to left of the stack a
smaller hearth with chamfered depressed arch and jambs, plastered. Arched
braces trenched inside studs where visible; frame mainly plastered. In left
upper room, blocked window of early glazed type with one ovolo mullion at front,
and similar window with 2 mullions at rear. Others may be present within the
plaster. The bread oven is complete with cast iron door. RCHM 22.
