House. Mainly C17, incorporating a late C14/early C15 structure of uncertain
type, possibly a hunt standing. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade
red clay tiles. 4 bays facing NE (the earlier structure forming the left bay)
with axial stack in second bay from left, forming a lobby-entrance. C19
external stack at right end, and single-storey lean-to extension. C20 2-storey
extension to rear of right bay. 2 storeys with attics. Ground floor, 3 C20
casements. First floor, 2 C20 casements and one C19 casement. 6-panel door with
top 2 panels glazed. Half-hipped gambrel roof. 6 octagonal shafts, rebuilt.
Both storeys of exceptional height. On the first floor, blocked hearth with
depressed arch. Part of the earlier structure is exposed in the rear of the
left bay, comprising a massive corner post with recessed inner angle, originally
higher than the present eaves level; heavy studding with wattle grooves and 2
curved braces trenched to the outside, weathered although now inside the house;
a top plate with edge-halved and bridled scarf; other parts probably present
within the plaster. Late C16 newel stair with carved oak post, wide moulded oak
rail, and later turned pine balusters. Scarletts was described as a mansion
with 128 acres in an abstract of title from 1618 (Essex Record Office, D/DRa
T.65). RCHM 4.
