7/12 Rose Cottage and Little
Orchard Cottage

Handed pair of cottages. Early C19. Timber framed, plastered, roof thatched.
4 bays facing N with central stack. C20 single-storey extension with tiled
hipped roof at left end. C19 extension with shingled roof and stack at right
end. One storey with attics. Rose Cottage, at left, has 2 C20 casements, one
more in swept dormer, and plain boarded door in tiled lean-to porch. Little
Orchard Cottage, at right, has one early C19 horizontally sliding sash of 30
lights, 2 C20 casements, one more in swept dormer, and plain boarded door at
front of thatched gabled porch. On plaster between the cottages a roundel with
painted inscription 'I.N. 1826'. Gambrel roof half-hipped at both ends. Frame
mainly plastered in Rose Cottage. In Little Orchard Cottage, exposed studding
with primary straight bracing, plain joists of vertical section, coal-burning
hearth with iron strap supporting brick arch, and early (probably original)
stair with quarter-turn at bottom.
