6/31 Brick House
Wrongly shown on O.S. map as Brook House. House. Early C18, altered in C19.
Timber framed, mainly plastered, with facade of red and blue brick in Flemish
bond, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays facing NE with central stack,
forming a lobby-entrance. Single-storey lean-to extension, formerly across
whole width of rear, partly replaced by early C20 2-storey extension behind left
bay. 2 storeys. 3-window range of mid-C19 sashes of 12 lights, with some crown
glass. C20 half-glazed central door, shallow hood with introduced carved
brackets. The brick facade rises to only three-quarters of the present eaves
height, blue flared headers contrasting with red stretchers. Chamfered axial
beams with notched stops. The original roof is of gambrel construction, with
face-halved and bladed scarfs in the wallplates and purlins, but the front
elevation has been raised and a normal 2-pitch roof built above it. The brick
facade represents the original height of the front wall, plastered above. In the
right upper room the lower pitch of the gambrel intrudes into the room, in the
left upper room it has been taken out. In a C19 alteration a tunnel has been
cut through the central stack to form a through entrance hall. RCHM 10.
