Description

TL 72 NW SHALFORD BRAINTREE ROAD
(east side)

3/46 Barn approx. 50 metres
east-south-east of
Nichol's Farmhouse

GV II

Barn. Late C16. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with corrugated
asbestos. 3 bays aligned NW-SE, with 2 aisles, and midstrey to SW. Jowled
posts, heavy studding with straight bracing trenched to the inside. Arched
braces to tiebeams replaced by bolted knees. Clasped purlin roof with tiebeam
and collars at half-bay intervals, and arched wind-bracing. Inserted large
double doors at SE end. Some components have early features which indicate that
this is rebuilt from a C13 barn. The NE arcade plate has a splayed and
undersquinted scarf, but elsewhere there are face-halved and bladed scarfs. One
unjowled arcade post has an oblique trench for a passing brace. Original wattle
and daub infill in midstrey.
