1/125 Brook Farmhouse

House. C.1300, altered in C16 and C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 3-bay hall aligned NW-SE, with late C16 one-bay
extension at SE end. Mid-C16 3-bay crosswing at NW end, forming an L-plan,
extensively re-styled in C18, with internal stack at NE end and external stack
at SW end, C18. Hall range of one storey with attics, crosswing of 2 storeys
with attics. NW elevation, 5-window range of C18 sashes of 12 lights with some
crown glass. 3 C18/C19 horizontally sliding sashes of 8 lights in gabled
dormers. Central 6-panel door with shallow hood on profiled brackets. SW
elevation, 6 C20 casements, and 3 more in gabled dormers. The hall has a
cambered main tiebeam with vertical and horizontal spandrel struts and crownpost
with 4-way bracing of wide section, steeply angled. The crownpost has a heavily
moulded base and capital, consisting of a series of angle fillets, with a
complete absence of rolls, heavily smoke-blackened. NE side of hall well
restored in early C20. The crosswing formerly had a central stack, removed in
the C18.
