House. C16. Timber framed, roughcast rendered, roofed with handmade red clay
tiles. 4 bays facing SW, with axial stack one bay from left end. One storey
with attics. 3 C20 casements, one more in gabled dormer. C20 door. The
interior has jowled posts, longitudinal plain joists of horizontal section in
both end bays. The floor in the 2 middle bays appears to be inserted, with a
transverse beam and longitudinal joists of horizontal section supported on
pegged clamps. Original straight stair of solid treads, with modern treads and
risers added. Edge-halved and bridled scarf in front wallplate, other splinted.
C16 rebated floorboards. Large wood-burning hearth, reduced for C19 coal grate.
On the upper floor one tiebeam has been removed at an early date between the
right end bay and the middle part, and another inserted which arches up to leave
the inserted doorway unobstructed, a rare and ingenious construction. In this
doorway, a C17 ledged door of 3 plain boards with original wooden handgrip. No
access to roof structure. The accessible evidence suggests that this house was
built with the middle 2 bays open to the roof, with or without a timber-framed
chimney, and that in the early C17 a floor was inserted, the new doorway made,
and the present brick stack built.
