5/144 The Cottage


House. C.1560, altered in C17, C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered,
roofed witn handmade red clay tiles. 2 bays facing W, of a range which formerly
extended one bay further S. Single-storey extension with catslide roof behind
right bay, early C17. C18 external stack at right end. C19 internal stack at
left end. 2 storeys. 2-window range of C20 casements. C20 door. C18/C19
brick floors throughout. Jowled posts, heavy studding, diamond mortices and
shutter grooves for unglazed windows at front and back. In left bay, double
ogee moulded axial beam with foliate stops, joists plastered to the soffits.
Each rafter couple has trenches for a high collar, altered to clasped purlins in
C17. A good series of carpenter's assembly marks on the rafters starts at VIII
at the S end, indicating that this building formerly extended 7 couples (approx.
3.50 metres) to the S. Chamfered tiebeam in middle of present S bay, with step
stops. This house has been converted to cottages, and re-combined. An abstract
of title states that it was built by Richard Hitching on land formerly part of
The Hoods, date not stated.
