House. Late C16, altered in early C17. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays facing S, with stack in middle bay against
front wall, and C17 one-bay extension to right. C17 rear wing at right end. 2
storeys and attics, rear wing of one storey and attics. 3-window range of C18
3-light windows, restored. 2 feature gables and central gabled dormer, each
with one C18 2-light window, restored. Door with 6 fielded panels and shallow
hood on scrolled brackets. Grouped diagonal shafts. Jowled posts, close
studding with tension braces trenched inside studs. Some weathering on right
surface of studding of original right wall, now an internal partition. Large
wood-burning hearth with replaced mantel beam facing right, blocked hearth
facing left. Chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue-plus-bar stops in
original build, lamb's tongue stops in right extension, and plain joists of
horizontal section. Late C18 half-round pine cupboard behind stack, with fluted
pilasters and dentilled cornice. Edge-halved and bridled scarf in rear
wallplate, and diamond mortices and mullions of unglazed windows. In rear wall
at first floor, C17 2-light window with arched heads and ovolo mouldings.
Original attic floor with chamfered beams, lamb's tongue stops and rebated
floorboards. Clasped purlin roof with arched wind braces, and some re-used
medieval rafters. The feature gables have been inserted after the original
construction. An original unglazed window with diamond mullions survives in one
gable of the attic. On the upper storey of the rear wing, late C18 cast iron
ducknest grate. RCHM 12.
