Villa, circa 1850. Red brick stuccoed and lined for ashlar except
rear wing of exposed red brick. Red brick chimney stacks rebuilt.
Welsh slate roof. Two storeys, three bays, central hallway plan.
Greek Doric porch distyle in antis, double half-glazed doors with
arched lights and internal shutters set in glazed timber screen
with narrow pilasters and rectangular fanlights. Tripartite
sashes with margin glazing in eared moulded architraves and
cornice hoods. First floor cill band. First floor sashes with
margin glazing in eared moulded architraves. Window of three
round arched lights with pilaster jambs to centre over porch.
Central light has sash door to roof of porch. Side elevations of
three bays, sashes with margin glazing in moulded architraves
flanking blind panels in moulded architraves to centre bay, round
arched to first floor. Rear elevation has half-glazed door with
fanlight surmounted by round-arched sash with margin glazing and
moulded architrave to stair. Two further sashes to left in
architraves. Rear wing of four bays, door with fanlight to angle,
12-pane sashes under cambered gauged brick arches. Overhanging
eaves with paired brackets. Interior: staircase with turned
balusters, ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail with columbine
carved detail to base, running dog detail to tread ends. Hall
ceiling with plaster rose and cornice. Room to left: marble
fireplace with console brackets, egg and dart cornice, ceiling
frieze with roundels. Reveals fully panelled with shutters,
carved gilt-wood pelmets. Room to right: black marble fireplace
with cast iron grate, moulded cornice. Reveals fully panelled
with shutters, timber curtain pole, moulded pelmet. Room to rear
right: white marble fireplace with cast iron grate. Rear wing,
middle room with painted stone fireplace, shutters; end room has
painted stone fireplace, pump, stone sink. First floor front
right, front left rooms have marble fireplaces flanked by
closets. Other bedrooms have painted stone fireplaces. All
internal doors original, four-panelled. The rear wing contains
butler's pantries and servants' hall and back kitchen-scullery,
both with ranges in large fireplaces, the scullery complete with
pump and sink. The house is remarkable because of its
exceptionally complete and unaltered state of preservation.
