Dovecote and stables. C18. Red brick in Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red
plain tiles. Square plan with entrance to NE. 2 storeys. NE elevation, ground
floor, 2 C19 casements with segmental arches, and central stable door with
lintel. First floor, door to dovecote with overlight of 6 panes. SW elevation,
Large imitation window with 2-centred head and imitation glazing bars painted on
plaster. Moulded wooden eaves cornice. Pyramidal roof with leaded hips.
Square cupola with lead ogee roof and dentilled wooden cornice, and lead pigeon
on roof. The ground floor is divided into 2 stables, boarded all round to a
height of approximately 2 metres, the central partition boarded to a height of
approximately 1.20 metres, with a wrought iron grill above. In each stable is
an attached C19 cast iron corner fixture comprising a combined water trough and
feed rack. The dovecote occupies the upper floor, with an internal vertical
ladder to it. The nesting boxes are complete, approximately 90 on the NW side,
90 on the SE side and 120 on the SW side, made of brick with alighting racks of
wood. Others added at eaves level. The roof and pigeon entry are complete and
original; the stables may have been inserted in the C19. Shown on tithe map of
1853, Great Coggeshall (Essex Record Office, D/CT 87).
